Stop Watching Reruns of Your Life
Why your goals are putting you to sleep
Yesterday we established that you are the star of the show. Today, let’s talk about the script.
Helen Keller once said the greatest tragedy is having sight but no vision. Most people are walking around with 20/20 vision but are blind as a bat when it comes to where they are going. They need a "Worthy Ideal"—a North Star that guides every action.
But here is the trap: Most people set goals that are just reruns of what they have already done. They are boring. They lack juice. To really live, you need to understand the three types of goals.
The ABCs of Goal Setting
A-Type Goals: This is doing something you already know how to do. Example: Buying a newer model of the car you already drive. This is not a goal; it is a chore list. It offers zero growth. It is like re-watching The Office for the twelfth time. You know exactly what Michael Scott is going to say. It is comfortable, but it won't change you.
B-Type Goals: This is what you think you can do. You have a plan. If you save X dollars for Y months, you can buy Z. It is logical. It is sensible. And it is utterly uninspiring. B-Type goals do not require faith; they just require a calculator.
C-Type Goals: Now we are talking. This is your fantasy. It is something you really want, but you have absolutely no idea how to pull it off. It seems illogical. It scares you a little. This is the only type of goal that leads to progress because it forces you to use faculties you didn't know you had.
From Fantasy to Fact
You might be thinking, "Bradley, isn't living in a fantasy world bad?" Not if you are using it to create reality. Everything you see around you—the phone in your hand, the chair you are sitting on—was once just a fantasy in someone’s mind.
The creative process works like this:
Fantasy: You let your imagination run wild. You dream without limits.
Theory: You give that dream serious thought. You ask, "Am I able?" (Yes, because you have infinite potential). You ask, "Am I willing?" (Are you willing to pay the price?).
Fact: Once you say "Yes," the theory becomes a goal. You commit. And suddenly, the universe starts moving furniture around to make it happen.
You are grateful for having clicked the links in my email because this is the moment you give yourself permission to want what you actually want, not what you think you can get.
A C-Type goal is a "Worthy Ideal." It is the thing you fall in love with. And you must be in love with your goal, or you will quit the moment things get hard. And things will get hard. But when you are pursuing a C-Type goal, the obstacles don't matter because the vision pulls you forward.
So, we have the foundation, and now we have the target. But how do we get from here to there? We can’t just wish for it. We need to plug into the power grid.
Tomorrow, I’m going to teach you how to tune your mental radio to the station where your goal is already playing.
Tell me this:
What is one "C-Type" fantasy you have been too afraid to admit you want?
