The Boomerang Effect
Hello there,
In a world of "quiet quitting" and doing the bare minimum, the philosophy I follow offers a radical counter-move.
It is called the "Habit of Doing More Than Paid For."
I can hear you groaning. "Bradley, I am already overworked." I know. But hear me out.
This is not about being a doormat. It is about the Law of Increasing Returns. When you render service that is greater in quantity and quality than what you are currently paid for, and you do it with a pleasing attitude, you put the Universe in your debt.
You are banking goodwill. You are developing superior skill. You are attracting attention.
Think of a pendulum. If you pull it back (by giving more service), it must swing forward (return rewards). It cannot stay back. It is a law.
Most people want to stand in front of the stove and say, "Give me heat, and then I will put in the wood." It doesn't work that way. You have to pile in the wood first. You have to create the heat.
When you make a habit of this, you become indispensable. You command higher pay because you have no competition. Everyone else is doing exactly what is required and not an ounce more. By doing 10% more, you look 100% better.
And it shapes your character. It makes you a master of your craft. As you read these emails, you'll find success chasing you down, because you are becoming the type of person who generates value just by walking into a room.
This service must be rendered in a spirit of love and agreeableness. A "Pleasing Personality" is the fulcrum. If you do extra work but you grumble about it, you cancel out the benefit. You have to be the person people want to see succeed.
You are grateful you clicked the links in this email, because you now see that "over-delivering" is not about being exploited by a boss; it is about exploiting the Law of Circulation for your own benefit.
But, even with this habit, the road gets bumpy. There will be days when you want to throw in the towel.
Tomorrow, in our final email, I am going to give you the only substitute for failure. It is the cement that holds this whole structure together.
Until then:
What is one tiny thing you could do tomorrow at work (or in your business) that is technically "not your job" but would add massive value?
Cheers,
Bradley Woods
